What makes oregano oil so potent?

February 7th, 2009

You must of heard about these benefits of oregano oil, but what makes it so potent? Isn’t oregano something we just sprinkle on top of our pizza? Well, that is what you would assume, however in reality, oregano oil contains a substance called Carvacrol. Carvacrol is what prevents the growth of bacteria. It also has the ability to desensitize pain receptors. This is the main reason behind oregano oils effectiveness. As I have said many times before.. oil pulling along with a few drops of oregano oil works WONDERS..

Keratosis Pilaris

February 6th, 2009

I was browsing through the yahoo answers for questions regarding oil pulling. Someone had asked if oil pulling would help their Keratosis Pilaris condition. While do not have the position personally, I have read on various forums that oil pulling has alleviated the symptoms of the condition in people that have tried it. If anyone else has any feedback or personal experience on the condition, please comment.

That is all for now

BTW, Keratosis pilaris (KP, also follicular keratosis) is a very common genetic follicular condition that is manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin. – Wikipedia

Another great article I came across regarding oil of oregano vs modern antibiotics. One point that I am glad they emphasized is the fact theat drug resistance does not develop against naturally occuring antibiotics.

How is your HEALTH?

February 5th, 2009

As we start a new year, it is a great time to look at the overall condition of your health.  I think you should take some time out and think about all the things you do daily which could be a detriment to your health. These are the things that you do subconsciously, everyday. I’m certain that if you take some time out to actually think about it, you will discover that many of these habits can be avoided. However, remember to keep oil pulling :)

Oil of Oregano Article

February 5th, 2009

I found an interesting article about oil of oregano recently. It further establishes the fact that doctors/pharmacists are very quick to dismiss something unless there is some extensive and formal scientific data promoting its effectiveness. However I will believe the experiences of people over scientific data any day. If something works, it works.. Here was an interesting quote in the article:

“An elderly woman who I used to treat takes a drop a day on her tongue. She used to catch every cold that came along, but now goes through the whole season without getting sick.”

Oil of oregano hit the mainstream about six years ago and was sold as a potential treatment during the SARS outbreak, the Walkerton E. coli crisis and the anthrax scares after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

But many people use it for a gamut of more common complaints, including seasonal allergies, athlete’s foot, infected splinters and toothache.

Sandra Domby, a massage therapist who also works at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, has been a fervent believer in oil of oregano since she first used it a year and a half ago to ward off a cold.

“If at night I feel a cold coming on, I’ll take it, and when I wake up in the morning the cold is gone,” she says.

Here is the link to the article, enjoy and comment :) .

Origins of Oil Pulling

So, what EXACTLY is oil pulling? Oil pulling (often referred to as oil swirling or oil swishing), invented by Ukrainian Physician Dr. F. Karach, M.D., is basically the process of swishing around oil in your mouth (think mouthwash, except using oil instead) for a period of usually about 15-25 minutes. It is referred to as “Kavala Graham” in Ayurveda texts. So why would anyone be crazy enough or even remotely have any interest in doing this? Dr. Karach has said that his method heals the person as a whole. When Dr. Karach studied his oil under a microscope after pulling, he discovered many live micro-organisms swimming in it.  He himself has cured his chronic blood disease of which he suffered with for over 15 years! The main premise of oil pulling is that by swishing oil inside of your mouth, toxins get “pulled” from your bloodstream and into the mucous membrane. One study entitled performed by Sharath, et.al, set out to determine the efficacy of oil pulling on oral health status using Sesame Oil. They recorded a DRASTIC decrease in plaque and micro-organisms in the plaque samples, concluding that oil pulling is an effective home therapy in maintaining and IMPROVING oral health.  Another study recruited 10 males (all subjects had mild to moderate gingivitis), and ran a 45 day oil pulling study. Using sunflower oil, each subject held the oil in their mouths for 8-10 minutes. This study also concluded that oil pulling has the ability to reduce plaque and gingivitis using Sunflower oil (Amith et al., 2007).  As you can see by now, there IS scientific evidence out there and more studies will undoubtedly be conducted in the future. It is clear that there is an established oral health benefit to oil pulling, but what good is oil pulling to your other health problems? What type of changes can you experience besides the changes inside of your mouth? As you will see, the benefits of oil pulling are unparalleled.

What should I use?

January 26th, 2009

One possibility would be for me to just tell you to buy any old oil and call it a day; however it is not that simple. If you do not purchase reliable and high quality oil, you will not get the full benefits of oil pulling.

So what type of oil can you purchase? Pretty much any edible oil that is refined or cold pressed (can be organic as well). The most common ones used for oil pulling are Sesame, Sunflower, and Coconut oil. Personally, I like coconut the best and that is what I continue to use today. There are certainly other oils you can use as well (olive, grape seed, hemp, flax, hazelnut, etc), however I recommend that you keep it simple and use one of the common three mentioned above.

If you have a trusted brand of oil then by all means use it. However for those who need to purchase some quality oil, I would recommend purchasing from www.vitaminshoppe.com as their oils are of high quality, not to mention they have a great selection.
